The Archdeacon's Residence at Mengo a magnificient house

By Hannington Sebuliba

You might mistake it to be a presidential palace, but it isn't. This is the Archdeacon's residence at Mengo Archdeaconry Headquarters. The place is worth being the house of the Archdeacon of Mengo since this is the oldest Archdeaconry in Uganda. How else would it be if not in its current glory!

It is two storied house with a brown read roof, is the only of its nature in Namirembe Diocese. Christians from all the parishes that make up the Archdeaconry have contributed generously up to this level where it is nearing completion.

In April, when the Archbishop of the Province of the Church of Uganda, His Grace Stanley Ntagali visited this Archdeaconry, he described this house as a palace for the Archdeacon and thanked christians for constructing such a nice house for the servants of God.

It is worth noting that when the then Namirembe Diocesan Bishop Samuel Balagadde Ssekadde posted Ven. John Gitta Kavuma to this place as its Archdeacon in 2008, the house that had been occupied by the successive archdeacons was in a sorry state. It had a very big structural cruck right from the foundation to the roof. The engineers declared it unhabitable and that’s when the Archdeacon together with the Archdeaconry Council decided to build a house that would stand the test of the time.

Today, many church members from far and near come to Mengo to see this house and if possible to copy the plan for their respective churches. It has actually become a model home for most of the Archdeaconaries and Dioceses throughout the Church of the province of Uganda.

In 2009, when Bishop Ssekkadde came to install the Archdeacon, he carried out one more function, of ground breaking for the construction of the new house. It was not easy to imagine that after a few years this work would stand out to be as magnificient as it is now. We can now comfortably say Ebenezer , "Thus far the LORD has helped us." 1 Samuel 7:12
